About AgingWellBC

AgingWellBC is a public knowledge hub that provides clear, research-informed guidance to support healthy aging in British Columbia.

Our Story

AgingWellBC builds on earlier work through the Pacific Regional Centre for Healthy Aging (PRCHA), which developed publicly accessible health information to support older adults in navigating common health concerns.

Through this work, it became clear that while valuable information existed, it was often difficult to find, scattered across sources, or not presented in ways that were easy to apply in everyday life.

AgingWellBC was created to bring this information together — to provide a central, accessible place where older adults, caregivers, and communities can find practical, trustworthy guidance.

Led by the Edwin S. H. Leong Centre for Healthy Aging at the University of British Columbia, and funded in part through a Michael Smith Health Research BC Reach Grant awarded to Dr. Eli Puterman, this initiative expands on that foundation by translating research into clear, actionable information and strengthening connections across health systems, community organizations, and public resources.

What We Mean by Healthy Aging

We embrace the World Health Organization’s Definition of healthy aging as “the process of developing and maintaining the functional ability that enables wellbeing in older age.” Therefore, healthy aging does not mean the absence of illness or maintaining perfect independence. It means supporting well-being, dignity, safety, and connection at every stage of life.

Aging is a natural part of living. Our goal is not to “fix” aging, but to provide information that helps people make informed choices and feel supported in their health journey.
